LOTS 84-92PROPERTY FROM THE COLLECTION OF YAN YUNTAI This collection of Chinese modern paintings was assembled by Yan Yuntai (Anthony Yen) and his father Yan Qingxiang (1899-1988). The elder Mr. Yan was a successful owner and manager of Da Long Steel and Iron Works in Shanghai before 1949. During and after the Cultural Revolution, Mr. Yan took up his attention to the arts. He took up calligraphy and traditional painting, and through the teachers he sought out, he developed relationships with an extended circle of painters and calligraphers. Recognizing the difficult circumstances that most of these artists experienced in the 1950s and 1960s, Mr Yan created a “salon” to welcome these talented individuals. They recited poetry in the garden, exchanged ideas, and hung their work in the living room, dining room, and center hall of the Yan family home at 699 Yu Yuan Road.Anthony Yen left Shanghai alone in 1949 at the young age of 17 and made his way to the United States. There he built a distinguished career as an expert in international business and trade. Sharing his father’s dedication to China’s traditional arts, Mr. Yen also acquired and treasured paintings from the artists he met during his visits back to China beginning in 1980.
