The cylindrical shaft of the pen is finely carved through layers of cinnabar lacquer depicting two scholars seating under a pine tree, accompanied by an attendent carrying a tray, while another figure on a punt floating along paddling through a lush wooded river landscape, all reserved on various diaper grounds. The cover is carved with a luohan holding an alms bowl and a monk's staff seating on a woven mat, attended by a scholar under a willow tree.
