QIANLONG PERIOD (1736-1795)
The rectangular panel is decorated with a scene of scholars and attendants gathered in and around a pavilion in a mountain landscape, with a crane in flight above as it flies towards its mate standing on the river bank. A hongmu panel mounted on the back has a gilt-highlighted, carved imperial poem by the Qianlong Emperor referring to the scene, followed by the signature of the prominent court official, Liang Guozhi.

Acquired in New York in the 1950s, and thence by descent within the family.

Liang Guozhi (1723-1786) was a native of Zhejiang province and attained the highest rank in the metropolitan and Palace examinations. He subsequently held numerous important posts, including Governor of Hubei Province, Councilor of the State, and Qianlong's personal secretary, and was involved in the compiling of Siku quanshu ('Complete Books of the Four Repositories').
