A FINELY CARVED MUGHAL WHITE JADE JAR
16TH-17TH CENTURY
The extremely thin material of the globular body is embellished with a pair of delicately carved leaf-form handles on the shoulder, under overlapping scalloped leaves in shallow relief around the slightly waisted neck, repeated with a single band of leaves encircling the base, above a splayed foot in the form of an open blossom carved on the base. The stone is of an even highly translucent white tone.

Compare the foliate handles and floral base with a Mughal jade bowl in the National Palace Museum collection, Taipei, illustrated in Exquiste Beauty - Islamic Jades, Taipei, 2007, p. 62, no. 52. The National Palace Museum bowl was sent to as tribute in 1770 to the Qianlong court.
