The head of the sceptre is carved in openwork with a bird descending amidst a bundle of lotus bloom, leaf and pod, each is borne on a long slender stem intertwining with other acquatic plants to form the shaft.

A similar boxwood ruyi also carved with lotus though without the bird was in the Qing Court Collection, published in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Small Refined Articles of the Study, Hong Kong, 2009, p. 328, no. 326 (fig. 1).
