Lee Chun-Yi was born in Taiwan in 1965 and settled in Hong Kong in 1970. He studied at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Tunghai University in Taiwan, and the Arizona State University. He currently teaches at the National Taiwan Normal University. Originally trained as a biochemist, Lee met mentor Liu Kuo-sung at a painting class and was encouraged to create paintings with innovative tools and technique. He thus created small soft wood cubic stamps and imprinted them with ink on paper to compose his landscape and flower paintings. Such pixelated images are interpreted as a complete, atmospheric picture from afar, but up close one can see tens of thousands of uniformly-sized squares, each different from the other. By combining the wisdom of Northern Wei stone rubbing and Northern Song landscape painting, Lee expresses an elegant aesthetic through a rational, well-planned execution and his continued appreciation of Chinese classical art.
