BENJAMIN DISRAELI (1804-1881)
An 8-page manuscipt letter, signed, on mourning paper, from 2 Whitehall Gardens, S.W., January 20, 1876, to the Lord Mayor, marked confidential and seeking the postponement of a public meeting on the slavery question: "It is of importance for the public interest, that there should be as little agitation as possible on the Slavery Question before the meeting of Parliament" the letter states, "otherwise men get committed to views, which, if attempted to be put in practice only aggravate the evils, which it is our common purpose to prevent. Slavery is not a party question, and cannot be made one. All parties, and all statesmen, have, upon it, the same policy -- But we must remember, that resolutions at public meetings, and even acts of Parliament, can't alter the law of nations -- To that we must all bow, and the only consequences of our attempt to defy its own importance is that our naval commanders are cast in damages" (split and creased on folds), with original envelope front.
