The current jade carving bears a morally didactic message, as it eulogises the importance of filial piety by depicting a character from a Chinese folk tale. According to this story, a boy named Zhou Yanzi wears a deer skin in order to join a deer herd and obtain milk from a deer to cure his father's illness.
