This very unusual design for rose-turning consists of a late-pattern base carrying a short slide with no screw but a hollow square and screw-holes under the moving slide to take an operating bar, presumably to engage with a backshaft geared to the mandrel (as on the lathe so long displayed at the Science Museum). Above this is a screw-adjustable slide in line with the first carrying the usual vee-bars which accommodate two inter-changeable tool slides. With a suitable backshaft on the lathe, the device would be simple to operate. One of the slides is for normal 9/16 square tools; the other is is of the metal rose-turner's type with a "geed" on separate adjustment.(v. Matthews, Engine Turning 1680-1980, p. 39, or Daniels, Watchmaking, Chapter 13)
