The subjects clearly based on Krieghoff’s models in the Thomson Collection (AGO) for which see D. Reid, Krieghoff Images of Canada, Toronto, 1999, p.168, no.86 ‘Indian Woman, Moccasin seller, c.1855’, and p.175, no.93 ‘Indian trapper on snowshoes, 1858’.
‘George H. Hughes (active 1861-78) was a Montreal painter about whom little is known. He lived at 73 St Patrick Street from 1870 to 1878, is referred to earlier as an engineer, and is said to have studied under Krieghoff although no documents are known to prove the fact. Many of his original oils depict habitants driving sleighs in winter, rural houses, and views of Quebec countryside. Fascinated by Krieghoff’s pairs of little paintings, one showing an Indian hunter on the trail, its companion showing a woman with moccasins in hand and blanket over her head, he copied them repeatedly. ‘ (J.
