Deeply influenced by the work of Syed Ahmad Jamal, Awang Damit Ahmad embarked on his own exploration and interpretation of abstraction and expressionism. His unique application of paint drips and rough texture to the canvas create works that are striking for their boldness and use of compositional space. Gaining local support from the likes of the Petronas Gallery following the achievement of his Salon Malaysia Award in 1991, the work of Awang Damit Ahmad have become integral in understanding the second generation of abstract artists in Malaysia. Iraga - Bukan Tampi Terakhir (Not The Last Breath) is from his Iraga series of works which he began to produce in 2011. The works from this series are highly complex, structural, and thrumming with a sense of frenetic energy.
The present lot experiments with the interplay between line, form, colour and texture within a culmination of forces. The fragmented architectural forms evoke a sense desolation onto the canvas, and the rough black lines fringed in red running across the top half of the painting conjure a visual scarring of the land. Coming from a background of farming and fishing, Awang Damit Ahmad conveys his sensitivity towards nature and of the rapidly changing landscape around him.
