Huang Ren (1683-1768) was a renowned poet and collector of inkstones during the Qing dynasty. Fuchang is the pseudonym of Ren Xun (1835-1893), a renowned painter of the Shanghai School.

A RECTANGULAR INSCRIBED DUAN INKSTONE

The rectangular inkstone is smoothly polished with a flat grinding surface incised with two confronted dragon motifs near the troughed ink well, framed on four sides with similar motifs. One vertical side is carved with a poem titled 'inkstone', signed Li Shanfu, the Tang-dynasty poet who composed this work. The other vertical side is carved with a poem by Huang Ren extolling the beauty of Duan stone, followed by his style name, Xintian. The rounded recessed base is carved in shallow relief with a Luohan seated on a mat, below an inscription identifying the figure, signed Fuchang.
