MARK OF BENJAMIN GODFREY OVER-STRIKING THAT OF CHRISTIAN HILLAN, LONDON, 1738
Each oblong, the cover with hinged shell finial, flat-chased with borders of rocaille, scrolls, and foliage around a central rococo cartouche engraved with coat-of-arms on one side and a crest on the other, the sugar-box on four foliate feet and with hinged cover, the caddies with sliding bases and covers, all in a fitted ebony box, together with two William IV silver caddy spoons, marked on detachable bases only and engraved with scratchweights '13-2', '13=4', and '16-0' , each spoon marked on reverse
the fitted box 10 ½ in. (26.5 cm.) long
the caddies 41 oz. 14 dwt. (1,296 gr.)
The arms are those of Welby impaling Cholmeley for William Welby (1710-1792) and his wife, Catherine (1709-1773), daughter of James Cholmeley of Easton and his wife Catherine Woodfine whom he married in 1731.
