Chenets with horses were highly fashionable during the 18th century, and a number of similar examples were found in the inventories made after the deaths of the celebrated bronzier Jacques Caffiéri and of the wife of Philippe Caffiéri (1755 and 1770 respectively). However, the majority of examples feature rearing horses, rather than the pacing horses found here, which were likely inspired by sculpture.

The C couronné poinçon was likely impressed on these chenets when they were sold during 1745-49 when this duty was collected.
