The design of the present lot is drawn from a mid seventeenth century example formerly in the Christopher Alexander Collection, sold in these Rooms, 15 October, 1998, lot 202. Whilst Tuduc has faithfully recorded much of the original design, the crenellated panel above the spandrels and the corner resolution of the main border do not occur on the original prototype. A similar example to the present lot is illustrated by Tuduc in Antike Orienttepiche aus Siebenburgen, Abb. XIV, a book that he falsely claimed was published by the Black Church Parish under the fictitious guise of Professor Dr. Otto Ernst, (Stefano Ionescu, Handbook of Fakes by Tuduc, Rome, 2010, pp.78-79).
