This painting relates to a composition by Jacopo da Valenza, now in the vestry of Santa Maria della Salute, Venice. Jacopo da Valenza's painting was itself based on a Madonna and Child by Alvise Vivarini, which in turn derived from Giovanni Bellini's Winthrop and Wittgenstein Madonna (F. Heinemann, Giovanni Bellini e i Belliniani, Venice, 1962, I, pp. 10-11).
