With its distinctive apron, bombé form and concave frieze drawer, this pair of commodes are characteristic of North Italian craftsmanship, particularly that of the Lombardy and Veneto regions. Related commodes include those illustrated in S. Columbo, L'Arte del Legno e del Mobile in Italia, 1981, figs. 473 and 475 and M. Agrellini et al., Mobili Italiani del Settecento, Milan, 1990, pp. 53 and 65. A similar single commode sold Christie's, Milan, 10 June 2002, lot 541.
