Stapleton Cotton was Wellington's Commander of Cavalry during the Peninsular War, distinguishing himself particularly at the Battle of Salamanca. He was not present at Waterloo, where command of the cavalry went to Lord Uxbridge. He is shown here as Colonel of 1st Life Guards, an honorary court position he was given in 1829. A full-length portrait of Stapleton Cotton by Hayter is now at National Army Museum, on loan from Apsley House, London.
