Each hemispherical on spreading circular foot in turn on a square base, with part-fluted lower body and gadrooned borders, the covers with crest finials, engraved with a coat-of-arms, the covers with initials, marked on base and cover, all in brass-bound oak chest with brass plaque engraved 'Eric Charrington'

The arms and crest are those of Charrington impaling Milward for Nicholas Charrington of Bures Manor, Reigate, Surrey and his wife Harriet (d.1863), daughter of John Milward of Bromley, Middlesex, whom he married in 1799.

Given to Nicholas Charrington of Bures Manor (1771-1827) by his wife, Harriett (née Milward) on the occasion of their marriage in 1799 and then by descent to his fourth son
Spencer Charrington, M.P. (1818-1904), who represented Mile End from 1885 for nearly twenty years, and then by descent to his eighth son
Captain Eric Charrington (1872-1927), R.N. and then by descent.

The Charrington family had been long established in Surrey before Nicholas Charrington, an ancestor of the original owner of the present lot, bought Bures Manor from Sir William Garway in 1622. Eric Charrington (1872-1927), a captain in the Royal Navy, served first in Zanzibar in 1896. He was mentioned in dispatches having seen service in Benin and China. He received the China Medal and was created a Companion of the Distinguished Service Order for his service with the storming party at the attack and capture of the Taku Forts.
