TURING, Alan Mathison (1912-1954) -- Geoffrey O'HANLON (1885-1975). Visitors’ book for Abbey Grange and Westcott House, 1914, 1919-1933, signed three times by Alan Turing (18-21 December 1931, 2-4 July 1932 and 17-18 December 1932, the first two reading 'A. M. Turing', the third 'Alan M. Turing'), entries on 30 pages, small 4to (257 x 197mm), blanks. Provenance: Geoffrey O’Hanlon (occasional pencil annotation; and thence by direct descent).
Geoffrey O’Hanlon (1885-1975) was a classics master at Sherborne School, Dorset. In 1920 he purchased for the school a new boarding house named Westcott House. It was suggested to Sara Turing that Alan would be best suited to O'Hanlon's house, the regime being likened to 'the nearest thing to a liberal government' (Hodges p.23). The dates of Turing's signatures denote that he visited Westcott House three times in his first two years up at King's College, Cambridge. Other interesting signatures include that of Alan’s brother, John, visiting Sherborne 20-22 June 1931, in Alan's last term at school. According to our research, NO ALAN TURING SIGNATURE HAS PREVIOUSLY BEEN SOLD AT AUCTION.
