The classically-draped female nymphs on this pair of candelabra are perhaps inspired by the group exhibited in the Salon of 1761 by Etienne-Maurice Falconet (d. 1791). Falconet's figures were intended for execution by Franois-Thomas Germain in silver, but quickly found success in all media. A pair of ormolu, patinated-bronze and marble candelabra of the same model from circa 1785 and possibly by Francis Remond were offered in The Wildenstein Collection, Christie's, London, 14-15 December 2005, lot 19, while a second pair is illustrated in H. Ottomeyer, P. Pröschel et al., Vergoldete Bronzen, Munich, 1986, 4.14.10.
