The inscription 'su e zhi zhi feng mi la, ming zhu ke ke beng shan hu' eulogises the beauty of flowers with bright berries and leaves. It may be translated as:
'The pure leaves conceal beeswax; shades of coral red burst forth from the bright pearls’
Compare the present lot to an earlier Jiaqing period (1796-1820) bowl with the same design in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum - 39 - Porcelains with Cloisonne Enamel Decoration and Famille Rose Decoration, Hong Kong, 1999, p. 202, no. 178. A similar pair of Daoguang bowls is in the Shanghai Museum, illustrated in Selected Ceramics from the Collection of Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Hu, Shanghai, 1989, pl. 89. Another pair of bowls with the same design is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, museum no. C.431-1926. A single bowl from the Simon Kwan Collection, included in the exhibition Imperial Porcelain of Late Qing, and illustrated in the Catalogue, Chinese University of Hong Kong, 1983, p. 70, no. 49, was sold at Christie's Singapore, 30th March 1997, lot 250. Another example from the C.P. Lin collection was included in the exhibition Elegant Form and Harmonious Decoration, illustrated in the Catalogue, Percival David Foundation, London, 1992, no. 193.
