It is particularly rare to find Yixing wares with surface painting, as they are more commonly seen with moulded, carved or applied decoration. The landscape scene depicted on the current brush pot mirrors a hand scroll painting on paper or silk, and the refined and subtle style of painting in keeping with the taste of the literati.
The artist Yang Jichu is recorded in Chongkan jingxi xianzhi (The Republished Jingxi Gazetteer), compiled by Tang Zhongmian during the Qing dynasty. It is noted that he was active during the same period as Chen Hanwen, during the mid 17th to the early 18th century. Like Chen Hanwen, Yang Jichu is famous for his work on Yixing wares, especially those painted in coloured slips like the present lot.
Examples of slip-painted brush pots similarly decorated with landscape scenes are in the collection of the Palace Museum in Beijing, illustrated in The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum - Purple Sandy Ware, Beijing, 2008, pp. 141-8. Two of these examples are dated to the Qianlong period and bear the seal of Yang Jichu.
Compare the current lot to a slip-decorated yixing brush pot, also bearing the seal mark of Yang Jichu, sold in the Auspicious Treasures from the Blumenfield Collection Sale at Christie's New York, 22 March 2012, lot 1246.
