Pierre Tourgueneff (1853-1912) was born to Russian parents in Paris where he studied under the animalier sculptor Emmanuel Frémiet. Chiefly known for equestrian and military subjects he exhibited at the Salon between 1880 and 1911, was awarded a 'Grand Prix' at the Exposition universelle in 1889 and received the Légion d'Honneur in 1903. Titled Hussard 1806 the Susse Fréres foundry edited this model in two sizes, the present lot being an example of the larger. Another cast of this size sold Christie's, New York, 13 April 2011, lot 271 ($43,750).
