A SMALL CARVED YAOZHOU CELADON DISH
NORTHERN SONG DYNASTY (960-1127)
The dish has shallow rounded base and upturned sides, encircled on the exterior by a single incised line. The flat interior centre is deftly carved and combed with a bold design of turbulent waves, and covered overall with an attractive olive-green glaze suffused with fine crackles, stopping neatly in a circle around the unglazed, recessed centre of the base, exposing the grey body.

Compare the Yaozhou celadon dish carved with a very similar wave design illustrated by R. Krahl, Chinese Ceramics from the Meiyintang Collection, vol. 1, London, 1994, p. 233, no. 420, and another similar example illustrated in The Masterpieces of Yaozhou Ware, Tokyo, 1997, p. 36, no. 41.
