Of irregular oval form, the inkstone is carved with a phoenix in flight flanked by clouds on the troughed inkwell, surrounded by a band of scrolling clouds. The reverse is carved with an inscription extolling the colour and texture of the stone, followed by a signature of Pang Ying.

According to Mingshi liezhuan (History of Ming: Collective Biographies), Pang Ying was a subordinate of Ji Gang, the powerful supervisor of the jinyiwei (imperial military secret police) during the early Yongle period.
