Medill Sarkisian was renowned for the diversity of his collection, ranging from Chinese art throughout the periods, to art from across all of Asia, in particular Armenian carpets.
He formed his collection through seventy years of travelling in the region, the current vase being one of his wife Ethel's favourite pieces and one that she had always insisted he should not sell.
Sarkisian enjoyed travelling and adventure so much that in 1941 he embarked on a six month journey with his wife, driving in a US surplus Jeep from Paris all the way to Peking.
A graduate of Harvard University in Chinese Art History, Sarkisian was advising Chinese industrial cooperatives as an expert in textiles.
