The moulded serpentine Breche d'Alep marble top above two drawers sans traverse with a musical trophy within a stylized C-scroll cartouche flanked by floral panels, the sides inlaid with floral sprays, on cabriole legs headed by rocaille and foliate-cast angle-mounts, the pearled chutes trailing to scroll-cast sabots, signed I.B.FROMAGEAU and JME, with label in top drawer

Jean-Baptiste Fromageau, maitre in 1755.
Born in the 1720's, Fromageau was a dealer as well as an ébaeniste established on the rue Traversiere and then on the rue du Faubourg Saint Antoine. retired in 1777, he was well known for the quality of the floral marquetry which he made, and he is mentioned in the Almanach Dauphin as a craftsman and dealer of grande réputation. Examples comparable with the offered lot are illustrated in P.Kjellberg, le Mobilier du XVIIIeme sicle Francais , 1989, p329.

A comperable commode was sold Christie's New York, 30 April 1999, lot 162 ($48,300 including premium).
