A WHITE JADE QUADRILOBED PENDANT
19TH CENTURY
One side is carved in low relief with a peach tree and a pine tree in a mountainous landscape, and on the reverse with a four-character inscription in seal script, tian bao jiu ru, all below openwork lingzhi at the top. The semi-translucent stone is of even color.

Jiu ru represents the 'Nine Similitudes', or a felicitous wish. The reference to Jiuru comes from a passage in the Tianbao chapter in the Book of Odes: 'May you be as the mountains and the hills, as the greater and the lesser heights, as all directions, having the constancy of the moon, like the rising sun, with the longevity of the southern mountain, and the green luxuriance of the fir and the cypress.'
