The heavily cast censer has a compressed body raised on three waisted supports, and a short neck below the flared rim. A three-character mark, Qin shu lu, is cast in a rectangle on the base.

The mark, Qin shu lu, which may be translated as 'Companion of qin and books', is the art name of Wu Bang Zuo, a Xuande period court official in charge of the making of bronze censers. The same mark is on two bronze tripod censers illustrated in Jin yu qing yan: Yang Bingzhen xian sheng zhen cang Ming Qing tong lu, National Museum of History, Taipei, 1996, p. 121, nos. 18 and 19.
