A PAIR OF LARGE FAMILLE ROSE OVOID VASES
19TH CENTURY
Each vase is decorated with three goats (sanyang) in a landscape setting, with one shown recumbent beside a rock on a hillock looking towards the other two standing amidst roses, camellias and various trees, all between molded and gilt-highlighted ruyi borders, and below a pair of elephant-head handles that flank the waisted neck decorated with upright shaped lappets and foliate scroll reserved on a ruby ground. A further, foliate scroll-decorated band encircles the waisted foot. The interior of the neck is covered with turquoise enamel, as is the base surrounding an apocryphal Qianlong iron-red seal mark.

Compare the similar vase of smaller size (12 5/8 in.), and with Daoguang mark, sold at Sotheby's Hong Kong, 11 April 2008, lot 3025, on which the background color of the neck and foot is green rather than ruby.
