A PAIR OF IRON-RED AND BLACK ENAMEL-DECORATED TEA BOWLS AND COVERS

The exterior of each bowl and cover is decorated in black with a poem by the Qianlong Emperor which is dated to the bingyin year of Qianlong (1746) and bordered above and below by narrow ruyi and petal-lappet bands in iron red. Qianlong seal marks in underglaze blue are on the bases of the bowls and inside the circular handles of the covers.

The poem inscribed on the bowls and covers, Sanqing cha (Three Purity Tea), was one of the Qianlong Emperor's favorites, and described the tea made from plum blossoms, finger citron and pine nut kernels, and further describes the virtues of tea making. Each New Year the emperor would hold a tea-drinking banquet in the Forbidden City and his guests were invited to compose poetry.
