Meiji period (late 19th century), signed Yoshida Shiei (1834-1904) and sealed Shiei
The rectangular two-tiered box on four short bracket feet, the lid chiseled and inlaid in gold, silver and shakudo with scenery of the gate of Mita Shrine and blossoming cherry trees by a river with ducks, the interior fitted and lined with silver, the underside of the lid with scattered inlaid gold cherry blossoms; signature on base
3 1/8 x 4¾ x 2¾in. (7.9 x 12.1 x 7cm.)

Yoshida Shiei learned metalwork from Hashimoto Isshi and later from the eminent Goto Ichijo school. After the Meiji Restoration, he exhibited in the Naikoku Kangyo Hakurankai (The National Industrial Expositions).
