A FRENCH PAINTED CHILD'S CARRIAGE OR 'GO-CART'
LATE 18TH/EARLY 19TH CENTURY
The pale-green coach-work painted with the monogram 'J.A.' to each side, below a raised canopy, the baize-lined interior with side straps and two box-seats, the body suspended from springs to the black-lined, cream-painted chassis by leather straps, the front wheels articulated to turn, the whole drawn by a single shaft, the springs stamped 'F.COUVERT'; together with a sheet of French newspaper dating to the late 18th century which was discovered in the roof lining during the restoration of the carriage, old restorations, redecorated
49½ in. (126 cm.) high; 32 in. (82 cm.) wide; 94 in. (239 cm.) long incl. shaft

This child's-carriage or 'go cart' would have been a particularly costly item when new; the fashionable demand for such conveyances in France having been increased in the earlier years of the 18th century when Louis XVI commissioned an elaborate example for the Dauphin at Versailles.
