Artist's… 显示更多 THE TURF 'In 1933, Lord Stanmore had suggested to Lord Hamilton of Dalziel that my grandfather should be the architect of the new Jockey Club rooms at Newmarket and he was appointed shortly afterwards. This was a building in which King George V took a personal interest and grandfather met him many times in the course of its erection. On the day of the Jockey Club's official opening my grandfather escorted King George V right round the Club rooms. The King looked at everything and made odd asides to him with an amused twinkle. When they were in the Steward's room he noticed my grandfather's scheme where the walls were lined with saddle leather. 'Quite right Richardson!' he chuckled, 'you've put them in a padded cell!' Then the King noticed that the door handles were in the shape of horses' heads. 'What are these Richardson?' he asked in that slight guttural accent of his. 'I designed them, Sir, with a purpose,' replied grandfather mischievously, 'Now no steward can ever say that he has never pulled a horse!'' S. Houfe, The Professor

Tattersalls was founded in 1776 near Hyde Park in London, but held its regular sales in Newmarket from the end of the 18th century. The company moved from London to Newmarket in 1960 and the New Sales Ring was built in 1965, to a design by Sir Albert Richardson, executed after his death.

We are grateful to John Harris and Charles Hind for their assistance with cataloguing the group of architectural drawings.
