This model appears as drawing No.27 in the 1874 catalogue of Andrew Handyside. Andrew Handyside aquired the firm in 1848, formerly owned by Weatherhead and Glover 1818-1843; thence Thomas Wright 1843-1848. He expanded the production to cover architectural, engineering and decorative wares such as garden vases and fountains.
The firm exhibited a number of pieces at the Great Exhibition of 1851 including Medici vases, a Bacchanalian vase and a bronzed vase of the present lot together with a fountain.
