The distinctive design of these candelabra can be traced to a 1795 sketch by the Roman designer Giuseppe Valadier (1762-1839), which is in the Tatham collection of drawings at the Victoria and Albert Museum. Giuseppe, the third generation in a dynasty of goldsmiths, sculptors and craftsmen, carried on the workshop of his father, Luigi, following the latter's death in 1785.
