The inscription cartouche details that the carpet was a royal commission made for Rukn al-Dawlah, governor of Khorasan and Sistan, this refers to Mohammad Taqi Mirza Rukn al-Dawlah, the third son of Muhammad Shah Qajar (r.1834-1848), who in AH 1293/1876 AD was appointed governor of Khorasan. Though the date appears to be 1196, it must in fact be AH 1296/1878-9 AD, at which time Rukn al-Dawlah was governor of Khorasan and Sistan.
Husayn Kermani was a renowned master weaver working in the second half of the 19th century, and it is probable that he is the same Husayn responsible for another royal commission, the Throne Room carpet from the Palace of Nasir al'Din Shah Qajar, sold in these Rooms, 6 April 2006, lot 292. Other examples of his weaving include a related rug of European design, sold in these Rooms, 9 October 2006, lot 58.
