Ferdinand Preiss (1882-1943) "At the 1930 Fair in Leipzig (Germany), one stand stood out. Set up by the Preiss & Kassler firm from Berlin, it was a combination of shelves and niches displaying the range of its chryselephantine figures. Most combined ivory with bronze and onyx, or bronze and marble, others consisted of ivory statues on marble or onyx bases, and there were a few plain bronzes () Frozen in mid-gesture, they seemed about to come alive, ready at any moment to hurl their javelin, let loose their arrows, complete their dives, their figure-eights on skates, their leaps or their marches. Naturalistic, hieratic, stylised, humorous, occasionally erotic, these figures were often exquisitely carved and cunningly designed, a combination so satisfying that is contained within itself a strongly addictive element."
