These mirrors are embellished with cluster columned pilasters, cusped arches and rich foliate friezes. Their antiquarian style reflects the Gothic manner adopted in the 1840s by such architects as Eugène-Emmanuel Viollet-Le-Duc (d.1879), perhaps most spectacularly at his 'renovation' of the chateau of Pierrefonds near Compiègne and the Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris.
