The disc is thought to be made from tabulate coral favosites or a close relative. This is an extinct kind of tabulate coral sometimes referred to as "honeycomb coral" due to the tightly packed polygonal cells that give it its characteristic structure. This type of coral was prevalent during the Ordovician and Devonian periods.
