The title, 'prima tavola' refers to this as the first map of three (the other two being of India and East Asia) in Ramusio's Delle navigationi et viaggi. Printed with south at the top, Gastaldi's map of Africa first appeared as a woodcut in the second edition of 1554. Following a fire in the shop of Thomaso Giunti, the woodblock was replaced by a copperplate in the next edition of 1563 and in the subsequent editions of 1588, 1606, and 1613. Betz 7; Norwich 6.
