Muhammad 'Ali al-Qastamuni was a descendent of Sha'ban Veli, the founder of the Sha'baniyya Khalwatiyya order of dervishes (see F. De Jong, Khalwatiyya, Encyclopaedia of Islam, Vol.IV, Leiden, (Brill), 1978, pp.991-3). This important order of dervishes had its centre in the Anatolian town of Kastamonu.
