The Funk Family of Bern This family of Swiss furniture makers, sculptors and clock-makers ran one of the most important workshops in Berne during the 18th century. Mathäus Funk (1697-1783) apprenticed in Frankfurt before moving to Paris and returned to Berne where he opened his workshop in 1724. His skilfull craftsmanship learned while working in Paris made him popular with local patrons. Funk was joined in business with his brother the sculptor Johann-Friedrich Funk I (1706-1775) and later by his eldest son, the clock-maker Daniel Beat Ludwig Funk (1726-1787). Funk furnished portions of Blaues Haus, Bern and was commissioned to provide pieces for the Bern City Hall.
