IMPERIAL, JINGDEZHEN KILNS, JIAQING FOUR-CHARACTER SEAL MARK IN IRON RED AND OF THE PERIOD (1796-1820)
The flattened ovoid bottle is crisply molded and finely enameled with a continuous scene of a group of foreigners on a ship approaching a shore where another group of foreigners bearing tributes awaits its arrival. One of the foreigners is shown riding a pony and another a lion, while two others help to lead an elephant.
2½ in. (6.3 cm.) high, glass stopper with gilt-metal collar

Hughes, The Blair Bequest, Chinese Snuff Bottles from the Princeton University Art Museum, Baltimore, Maryland, 2002, p. 194, no. 251, where the author cites two further Jiaqing bottles of this design, one from the Gerry P. Mack Collection, sold in our South Kensington rooms, 8 October 1999, lot 5, and one illustrated by H. Moss, Snuff Bottles of China, London, 1971, no. 293.
