Gampopa (1079-1153) was originally a student of the Kadam school of Buddhism promulgated by Atisha and subsequently studied under the great master, Milarepa (for more info on Milarepa, see lot 568 in this sale). With the knowledge gathered from the yogi, Gampopa was able to successfully blend the traditions of the Kadam school with Mahamudra tantric practices, leading to the formation of the Kagyu lineage as it is understood today.
