William Hayley dates Romney's work on the Banquet scene in Macbeth to the spring of 1792 (The Life of George Romney, Esq., London, 1809, pp. 172-3) and there are sketchbooks of studies by Romney of this subject in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge, and the Folger Shakespeare Library, Washington.

For a drawing by Romney of Lady Macbeth see lot 31.
