A RARE PAIR OF ZITAN AND HUAMU ARMCHAIRS, MEIGUIYI
QING DYNASTY, 18TH/19TH CENTURY
The back and arms are formed by well-figured huamu panels, finely carved in mirror image with birds perched among flowering branches. The three-panelled back and two side panels are set within a square zitan frame enclosing the hard seat panel. The frame is supported on square legs ending in hoof feet and joined by aprons carved in relief with archaistic scrolls.
