Each upholstered in close-nailed tan leather, the foliate carved top-rail above padded back, arms and seat, the arm terminals and legs with zoomorphic masks, on square splayed feet, the underside of the front seat-rail each stamped with the letters C to J inclusive and also stamped with a name, C LALJI JIWA, D PREMJI ZAVER also inscribed in chalk Bingley, E JERAM GORDHAN, F ESMAIL KARIM, G HARILAL LALJI, H GIRDHAR PITAMBAR, I PREMJI & CHURNILAL DERJI, J BHANA & LAXMAN (8)

It has been suggested that the names stamped on these chairs are the names of various Bombay merchants and that the chairs were probably used in a Bombay merchant's boardroom or committee room.
A related pair of chairs are in the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts.
