The seated mendicant monk is modelled with loosely fitting robes open at the front to reveal his portly figure, in his right hand he holds a bowl, a shoe rests on the hem of his robes next to his foot. The base bears the impressed four-character mark Jiang Minggao that may be translated "made by Mianggao".

The base of the figure has an old collection label "F.C.Williams London". Budai is a bodhisattva and the symbol of cheerfulnes and kindness. Related blanc de chine figures were made in Dehua and in Jingdezhen. A figure of Liu Hai dating to the late 17th century with a related four-character mark is in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, Inv.No. AK-NM 6589.
